About NUSKC
FRESHERS and RETURNING STUDENTS! Welcome to Newcastle!
The Newcastle University Shotokan Karate Club has had a revamp, with our new instructor Sensei John Thomson 4th Dan, who started teaching at the club in 2007, he has helped the club go back to traditional Shotokan karate. His classes are stimulating physically and mentally, building his students up to a good standard so that training is safe, interesting and improves fitness as well as skill. His classes cover all aspects of karate including Kumite, Kata and Kihon, as well as his demonstrations of the application of karate. The club, under the good teaching of Sensei Thomson has competed in the 2008 BUSA and 2009 BUCSĀ karate championships winning various medals for the university and is looking forward to future competitions.
We have a wide range of members from all types of degree and year, all of whom are friendly both in and out of the dojo. We attempt to foster a good team atmosphere and organise socials and other outings. Some of the more (or less) dedicated members manage to go to the pub after most sessions too!
The club is a member of the KUGB (Karate Union of Great Britain) which was established in 1966 and consists of over 400 clubs and 11,000 members all of which practice Shotokan Karate. It is the largest single style association in Great Britain. For more information on the KUGB you can look at their website www.kugb.org
